Book a holiday cottage in Clare, a town with over 100 listed buildings and picturesque surroundings
Clare is just an amazing place to stay on holiday with plenty of places to explore. This small town in the English county of Suffolk, lies just north of the picturesque River Stour. It is home to over 100 listed buildings including a 13th century flint-stone castle and delightful to walk round to absorb the olde world atmosphere. This quaint town is wonderful for those who love to soak up a bit of history and would enjoy antique shops and ancient inns. The remains of the medieval castle sit on top of a motte that overlooks the rest of the town, and is part of the Clare Castle Country Park. This stunning park is set within 25 acres of land and features a Suffolk Holidays trail along the river and through the forestry, and is home to an abundance of wildlife.
With a number of shops and cafes lining the high street, Clare is also home to four great pubs which are all housed within historical structures. The Black Swan dates from around 1600, and another two also date from around this period. Each of these pubs serves delicious food and tasty beverages and visitors will be greeted by friendly locals with open arms.
Clare is home to the Ancient House Museum, which is an incredible Grade I listed house dating back to the 14th century. Given to the town in 1938 for public use, a museum was created decades later and there are wonderful exhibitions exploring the history of Clare and the people who used to live and work in this lovely town.
Another interesting place to check out if visiting or staying in Clare is the Clare Priory, which was founded in an incredible 1248 and is the home of the Augustinian Friars in Britain. The grounds are open to the public and are well worth the visit.
Clare has its own charm and character and is a wonderful place in which to stay for a self-catering cottage break with loved ones in Suffolk.
