Eye is a special little town with acres of heritage that makes for a fascinating stay. You may be able to find a period cottage to rent or even a centuries old town house that has been converted into holiday lets. Beautiful Suffolk farmlands surround Eye where there are various farmhouses and former peasant's cottages that have been renovated and smartened up into tasteful and characterful holiday homes. Self-catering is a free and easy form of holiday accommodation which allows guests to choose whether they would like to cook for themselves or dine out. It also means that guests can enjoy their favourite foods and drinks at ordinary retail prices, so a self-catering break in Eye could be most economical.
The small and quaint market town of Eye in Suffolk is situated on the River Dove and is home to a motte and bailey medieval castle, built in around 1066. Today, only the ruins of Eye Castle remain, yet it still makes an interesting visit for those keen on investigating local history when on holiday. There is also a 14th century church, the Church of St. Peter, often thought of as one of the most beautiful in all of Suffolk due to its beautiful rood screen.
There is much to see in Eye for those wishing to rent a self-catering cottage in the area and spend some time exploring this gorgeous town. With a picturesque picnic site next to the trickling River Dove, visitors can take relaxing walks through the countryside, stopping off here for a lunch overlooking the river. There are plenty of woodland walks with designated paths.
There are also numerous shops in Eye, a pub called the Queens Head which serves up food, locally produced Aspall's cider and Adnam's real ale - it's always good to taste the local specialities during a holiday somewhere new. People on holiday may also wish to try Eye's cafes, and browse the brilliant second hand bookshop which used to be the booking office of the small theatre that used to be in Eye. Perhaps find a good book and purchase a few treats to enjoy later back in your holiday cottage. The village does not have any retail chains, making it seem very unique and authentic with individually owned stores, and it has its own markets and wonderful charm.
The clock tower of the town hall is an outstanding landmark in the town. The walls of the town hall are very neatly adorned with small flints, typical of Suffolk. Similar decoration can be seen in a few of the older walls around gardens and on buildings in the town.
Eye has a fantastic charm about it and is a wonderful place to visit with friends and family on a cottage break in Suffolk.
