Boxford in Suffolk is one of those villages where you will sometimes feel that you have stepped back in time. For holidaymakers, it’s a large enough village to offer a convenient base. Ideal for discovering the Suffolk countryside and Stour Valley (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), this pretty village is also convenient for two nearby market towns, namely Hadleigh and Sudbury.
At the heart of the village is St. Mary’s Church, a picturesque church worth visiting, both for its exterior and interior features. Mostly dating from the 1400s, it’s known for its memorial brasses and its north porch made of oak. For more history, picture postcard, timber-framed cottages are positioned close to the church.
The Edwardstone Alms Houses built in 1855 have now been converted into private homes. A walk around Boxton reveals numerous centuries old houses and curious features. Admire the way that a small bridge has been built to allow passage of walkers as a stream passes through front gardens.
Boxford is quiet, with not much traffic passing through. However, if you want something a little livelier, the village has two welcoming pubs. The South Suffolk Cycle Route A3 passes through Boxford and indeed the country lanes near Boxford are perfect for safe cycling holidays with little traffic and plenty of pubs to stop off at.
An excursion to Sudbury brings more historic buildings and a history dating back to the Saxon period. Such is its appeal that it has been a filming location for television shows, most notably the popular series, Lovejoy. The town of Hadleigh is of equal interest to lovers of history, with 250 listed buildings and architecture dating from medieval times.
Walking and cycling in the surrounding countryside is a treat for active families, and you will see so much more than from a car. Gently rolling scenes here have been the inspiration for painters, most famously John Constable, whose Suffolk landscapes put the county on the map for discerning art lovers. Another artist, Thomas Gainsborough, is celebrated at Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury, where the artist was born. Museum exhibits, including his local landscapes, and the house itself give further insight into this delightful area.
So whether it’s the thought of getting outdoors, or soaking up a bit of culture, or browsing the markets that gets you motivated, staying in Boxford has much to recommend it.
